Birth Certificates

All vital records obtained are certified copies. No photo copies are available.
Records are available for Dickinson County births ONLY.
Records are available from 1891-Present.
Records prior to 1891 are on file with
Menominee County and/or the State of Michigan Vital Records Office.

Who can request a birth certificate?
Birth records are sealed in the State of Michigan and are not public records.
Birth certificates can only be given to:
        -  The individual named on the record.
         - A parent of the individual named on the record. 
         - A legal guardian of the individual (with legal documentation). 
          -An heir (if the individual is deceased and relationship is shown). 
         - A court with a court order.
          -The Public if the record is over 100 years old.

How do I request a birth certificate?
Requests for birth certificates can be made in person, by mail, or via fax.
You will need:
  • Valid photo ID (or photocopy of, if requesting by mail)
  • Name, address and telephone number of person requesting certificate
  • Relationship to person named on the record (Self, parent, legal guardian, etc.)
  • Signature of person requesting certificate
  • Full birth name of person on the record
  • Date of birth
  • City of birth
  • Father's full name
  • Mother's full name before first married
  • A Request Form is available by picking on the following link:  Birth Request form. Please type your information into the fields of this document, print, sign and submit to the County Clerk's office.
  • Appropriate fee
How much does a birth certificate cost?
  • $20.00 – one certified copy
  • $15.00 – each additional copy of the same record
Method of payments accepted:
  • Cash
  • Local Dickinson County check (no Out of County checks)
  • Money orders
  • MasterCard/Visa *
Please make checks and money orders payable to: “Dickinson County Clerk”.

* Credit card payments must include:  Full Name on Card, Card Number & Expiration Date (MM/YY),
3-Digit V-Code & Billing Address.

Where do I bring/send/fax my request?
Requests can be made in person at the County Clerk’s Office at the Courthouse located at:      705 S. Stephenson, Iron Mountain, MI

How long does it take to receive the certificate?
Requests made in person are processed while you wait and the birth certificate is issued immediately.

Requests through the mail are processed the same day they are received and the birth certificate is sent out immediately.

All other requests are processed once payment has been received.
