As of the 2000 census, there were 27,472 people, 11,386 households, and 7,583 families residing in Dickinson county. The population density was 36/mi2. There were 13,702 housing units at an average density of 18/mi2.
The racial makeup of the county was:

- 0.03% Pacific Islander,
- 0.14% from other races, and
- 0.85% from two or more races.
- 0.68% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 11,386 households out of which 31% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55% were married couples living together, 8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33% were non-families. 29% of all households were made up of individuals and 15% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
The population was spread out with 25% under the age of 18, 6% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 18% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.
The median income for a household in Dickinson County was $34,825, and the median income for a family was $43,021. Males had a median income of $36,501 versus $22,952 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,516. 9% of the population and 7% of families were below the poverty line. 11% of those under the age of 18 and 9% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
